Material Grounding

09 April - 02 May 2026

Material Grounding explores the quiet relationship between matter and meaning, and how physical forms can steady the senses. The work draws on the calming qualities found in our natural environment, embodying indirect depiction through tone, rhythm and movement. Each piece becomes a space where thought and feeling settle into material form allowing memory to surface, shift, and restore itself.

With underlying themes of reflection and connection at its conceptual core, Stephanie Jook presents a collection of works that invite deeper introspection into how we engage with, interact with, and perceive both our internal and external worlds. The collection of work reflects the subtle patterns of daily experience, the push and pull of internal tides, the way moments collide, disperse and return. Forms echo the softened edges of a darkened sky, the slow drift of shifting light, and the gentle traces left by time through material form, evoking memory and drawing up the quiet internal responses that sit beneath the consciousness. These gestures speak to connection, transition and the emotional undercurrents that shape our passage through the world.

Employing monochromatic tones, coarse textures, and sculptural elements, Jook evokes a sense of movement through material exploration. Her works map the interrelation between light and dark, oscillation and stillness, tracing the push and pull of time as it is felt and remembered. Each piece holds stored memory, stirring emotion and awakening responses that ripple through unseen layers of consciousness. The work becomes a meeting point between lived experience and material presence, a quiet grounding where sensitivity, memory, and perception intertwine. Material Grounding invites viewers into this stillness, offering a moment of reflection within the continuous movement of life.

Living and working in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia, Stephanie Jook is a contemporary artist whose practice is conceptually driven by the emotive potential of monochromatic abstraction. Working intuitively across painting and sculpture, she embeds experience through mark-making and materiality. Her works explore vulnerability and fragility as sources of strength, held in tension through opposing visual elements and material contrasts.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from RMIT University in 2022, Jook has presented three solo exhibitions and has been curated into group exhibitions across Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, and Hobart. Material Grounding represents a continuation of her ongoing investigation into material presence, memory, and the quiet resilience found within states of becoming.
