For Sydney Contemporary, Void_Melbourne is presenting works by Melbourne-based artists Alex Walker & Nick Devlin along with Sydney-based artist Justin Trendall.

Following a successful showing at the Melbourne Art Fair, Alex Walker will present a series of large-scale, handmade colour darkroom prints exploring the materiality and conceptual role of light within the darkroom process. The work reflects on light’s essential function - not only as a physical entity but as the primary agent of creation within analogue photographic practice. 

Nick Devlin explores the process of gestural marks on canvas. The surfaces resemble a field of tiny strokes or cellular marks, creating a vibrating optical texture. From a distance the paintings read almost as color fields; up close they reveal the accumulation of individual marks. For Sydney Contemporary, Nick will continue his exploration with gestural & layered marks through a series of new works on canvas, echoing the qualities associated with optical abstraction and process-based painting; there is no focal point, figure, or horizon. Instead, the painting functions as a continuous visual field, balancing gesture, colour contrast, and surface texture. 

Sydney-based Justin Trendall’s practice explores the relationship between history, cultural identity, and networks of influence. Working primarily with screen printing and textiles, his work seeks to visualise how histories, communities, and ideas connect across time. A recurring device in his work is the “cultural map.” These works often take the form of delicate, web-like structures of lines and names that plot connections between figures from art history, contemporary culture, and the artist’s own social world. The resulting compositions function simultaneously as ornament, diagram, and archive, revealing hidden networks of influence and shared histories. Justin’s presentation introduces the audience to scaled-up screen prints on fabric continuing his relationship between visual mapping and textile structures. The woven or web-like qualities of the fabric echo the conceptual networks he depicts, suggesting the fragility and interconnectedness of cultural memory. Our booth promises a carefully conceived and coherent presentation which reflects the gallery's ongoing ethos.
